Linnanjuhlat ja suomalaista iskelmää – erilaisia juhlaperinteitä

The Finnish Independence Day is celebrated on December 6th, and Christmas is celebrated in Finland already on Christmas Eve, December 24th. Finnish people have plenty of traditions, but there are still many different ways to celebrate. We asked our office staff how they usually celebrate the Finnish Independence Day and Christmas – read more below! 

Itsenäisyyspäivä / Independence Day

Itsenäisyyspäivänä yleensä katson Linnan juhlia ja syön rauhassa illallista. Ylellä on usein myös muita hyviä itsenäisyyspäivän ohjelmia suomalaisuudesta ja suomalaisista. Kuuntelen Finlandia-hymnin ainakin kerran.  

On Independence Day, I usually watch the Independence Day Reception on television and have a peaceful dinner. Yle also has other great Independence Day programmes on Finnish people and what it means to be Finnish. I listen to Jean Sibelius's Finlandia hymn at least once.

Minä vietän itsenäisyyspäivää hyvin samankaltaisesti kuin monet muutkin suomalaiset – katson itsenäisyyspäivän vastaanottoa ja juon ehkä hieman kuohuvaa. Itsenäisyyspäivän vastaanoton katsomisessa parasta on nähdä kaikkien vieraiden asut (ja kommentoida niitä). Tämä vuosi on kuitenkin hieman erilainen, sillä menen itsenäisyyspäivänä Jytää ja iskelmää -nimiseen tapahtumaan! Tapahtuman DJ soittaa suomalaisia iskelmäklassikoita vinyylilevyiltä. Suomalainen iskelmämusiikki on lähellä sydäntäni, joten olen hyvin innoissani!

I celebrate Independence Day in much the same way as many other Finnish people – I watch the Independence Day Reception on TV and maybe drink some bubbly. The best part of watching the Independence Day Reception is seeing all of the guests' outfits (and commenting on them). This year will be a little different, however, as I will be going to an event called Jytää ja iskelmää on Independence Day! The DJ at the event plays Finnish schlager classics (iskelmäklassikoita) on vinyl. Finnish schlager music is close to my heart, so I am very excited!

Joulu / Christmas

Joulua vietän yleensä vanhemmillani ja tädilläni koko suvun kesken. Joulukuusen haemme metsästä aatonaattona ja koristelemme sen joko silloin tai aattoaamuna. Jouluaattona syömme yhdessä riisipuuroa ja katsomme joulurauhan julistuksen. Sen jälkeen puuhastelemme kaikki omiamme, osa käy kirkossa, osa muilla sukulaisilla, ja kuuden aikaan syömme yhdessä jouluillallista.

Ruuan ja kahvien jälkeen meillä on vuorossa oma erikoinen perinteemme: minä, siskoni ja serkkuni esitämme Tiernapojat-näytelmän. Emme vuosien saatossa ole vieläkään oppineet ulkoa vuorosanoja tai lauluja eikä meillä ole kuin yksi nuottikirja josta lukea. Kruunuina meillä on vanhoja muovikruunuja ja tiaroja, miekkoina yksi puumiekka ja kaksi tohtoriksi väitelleiden miekkaa. Esitys on joka vuosi yhtä kaoottinen ja hauska, ja kuuluu siksi vahvasti meidän jouluperinteesemme. Sen jälkeen, jos paikalla on pieniä lapsia, joulupukki piipahtaa paikalle tuomaan lahjat ja availemme niitä yhdessä. Puolen yön aikaan juomme kahvia ja pelaamme vielä yhdessä lautapelejä.

I usually spend Christmas at my parents' and my aunt's house with the whole family. We go and get the Christmas tree from the forest on the 23rd and decorate it either then or the next morning on the 24th. On Christmas Eve, we eat rice porridge together and watch the Declaration of Christmas Peace on TV. After that, we all do our own stuff, some go to the church, some visit other relatives, and around six, we eat Christmas dinner together.

Dinner and coffee are followed by our own special tradition: me, my sister, and our cousins perform the traditional Tiernapojat play ("Star Boys"). Throughout the years, we still haven't learned the lines or songs by heart, and we only have one song book to read from. We use old plastic crowns and tiaras as our crowns, and one wooden sword and two doctoral swords (given to someone who has completed their doctoral degree) as our swords. The performance is always equally chaotic and fun, and that is why it's such an important Christmas tradition for us. Afterwards, if there are small children present, Santa Claus pops by to bring the Christmas presents, and we open them together. At around midnight, we have coffee again and play some board games.

Meidän perheen jouluaatto alkaa riisipuurolla ja kinkkuleivillä. Käymme myös joulusaunassa jo heti aamupäivällä, sillä vanhaan ulkosaunaan on mukavampaa kävellä kun on vielä valoisaa. Iltapäivällä me käymme myös joulukirkossa, vaikka muuten kirkossa ei olekaan tapana käydä. Joulukirkko on kuitenkin perinne josta minä ja siskoni emme halua luopua!

Illalla syödään hyvin ja usein pelataan jotakin lautapeliä tai tehdään palapeliä. Joulupöydässä meillä on aika perinteiset ruuat (muun muassa paljon lohta), ja minä teen joka joulu jälkiruuaksi rocky road -suklaata! Ruuan jälkeen siskoni ja isäni ottavat yleensä päiväunet, jonka jälkeen avataan yhdessä lahjat. Jouluni on siis hyvin rauhallinen, ja se on mielestäni hyvä! 

In our family, Christmas Eve begins with rice porridge and ham sandwiches. We go to Christmas sauna already in the morning because it is nicer to walk to our old outdoors sauna when it's still light outside. In the afternoon, we also go to Christmas church, even though going to the church is not something we usually do. Christmas church is still a tradition that me and my sister don't want to let go of!

In the evening we eat well and often play board games or build a puzzle. We always have the traditional foods (including lots of salmon) on the Christmas menu, and I make some Rocky Road chocolate for dessert every year! After dinner, my sister and dad usually take a nap, after which we open the presents together. My Christmas is very peaceful, and I like it that way!
