Jyväskylän kesäyliopisto

Intensive summer course in Finnish language and culture

The course consists of five contact teaching lessons a day (5 x 45 minutes) and other lectures. The total length is 80 lessons, 6 ects). In addition to that, the students will be given homework and small project assignments. There are no classes during the weekends. The lessons will be given mainly in Finnish, but English will be resorted to if necessary.

Language skills will be practiced by speaking, writing, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. The emphasis will be on learning and practising the skills that the participants find most appropriate for themselves. Since a language is not merely learned in a classroom, the teaching will extend to the Finnish surroundings. The students are motivated to make use of Finnish language in everyday situations.

We aim at tailoring the teaching programme and materials according to each group’s needs and hopes. Therefore, you can take part in the course even if you don’t know a word of Finnish yet! The teachers are well experienced specialists in teaching Finnish as a Foreign Language. They use practical methods and techniques, and are used to working with various kinds of learner groups. See the video.

The intensive summer course in Finnish language and culture has been divided into 4-6 groups of different proficiency levels every year.  The size of the group is  max. 15 students. There are groups for beginners, as well as for intermediate and advanced level learners (A1 - C2; you can test your Finnish skills here for free: www.dialang.org ).

We will also organize a special group for translators, if there is a sufficient number of participants.
