Free time program

An essential part of the course is our diverse free time program which brings people to the course year after year. The free time program is one of a kind in Finland: you will not get an opportunity to immerse yourself in the language and culture anywhere else!

By taking part in the free time programme you’ll get more familiar with the Finnish culture and customs and get a chance to explore the beautiful Jyväskylä. The activities are led by native Finns, giving you a chance to practise your newly learned Finnish skills outside of the classroom, too!

Our course includes diverse free time activities taking place approximately five days a week during evenings and weekends. Overall the free time program is organized for approximately 15 hours. Some of the free time activities are included in the course fee, and some require additional payments Our free time program is one of a kind in Finland, and it combines the best parts of Finnish winter and language learning through interesting and memorable experiences!

The free time program is planned together with local partners. The program includes trips to nature, sightseeing and visits also outside Jyväskylä. During the course the free time program helps students get to know the Finnish way of life through food, culture, daily life and other activities accompanied by natives. During the course we go to sauna, have evenings around an open fire, skate on the Jyväsjärvi lake next to our campus, and a lot more.

All free time activities are guided. Course participants can choose activities that they are interested in, or even take part in all of them should they wish to do so! Registration for free time activities takes place during the course.

Examples of free time program:

  • Study group in in the afternoon (2-3 times during the course) - a great chance to practice Finnish and do your homework together with your course mates
  • Welcome evening, games and getting to know each other
  • Walking tour in the city center
  • Sauna evening (maybe even ice swimming!)
  • Ice skating
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Visiting local museums
  • Farewell evening

For year 2023 we plan to possibly make a trip to a spa or a skiing center, if enough participants are interested.
